Training shall be valid for five years. The seafarer holding the basic firefighting certificate shall demonstrate every five years that he has maintained the required level of training by attending a refresher training course.
The refresher training of the basic fire-fighting system, lasting 8 hours, aims to update the following competences:
Minimise the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency fire situations.
Fight and put out the fire.
The course includes different teaching techniques: lectures for the understanding of theoretical knowledge, questions for the verification of the understanding of the topics of the course, practical exercises (single and team) on the fire field.
The basic fire refresher training shall be carried out in accordance with:
Regulation VI/1, paragraphs 1 and VI/3 of the Annex to the STCW’ 78 in its updated version and to the corresponding Sections A-VI/1.2.1.1.2 and A-VI/3 of the STCW Code, as well as the fire organisation on board oil tankers, chemical and gas tankers in accordance with Regulation V/1-1.2 and V/1-2.2 of the Annex to the STCW’78 in its updated version and the corresponding Sections A V/1-1.1 and A-V/1-2.1 of the STCW Code respectively.
internal ‘quality management’ procedures, complying with the requirements of UNI/EN/ISO 9001.

The refresher training of advanced fire fighting can be carried out in two ways:
Full 12-hour mode aims to update the following competencies:
Control of fire operations onboard ships.
Organisation and training of firefighting team.
Verification and maintenance of fire detection and extinguishing systems and related equipment.
Investigations and reports on accidents involving fires on board
Reduced 8-hour mode aims to update the same competencies but omitting to update certain knowledge, which must be completed onboard ships in accordance with current legislation.

The courses are weekly organized except the second, third week of August and the Christmas holiday season. In addition, courses are organized on request through private or corporate bookings.
