IMAT is authorized to issue the Marlins Language Certification as a Marlins approved test center.
The Marlins certificate indicates the level of English proficiency, It has become an international standard in the maritime field.
The Marlins ICS is an online test, officially recognized by the UK Maritime Coastguards Agency as evidence of English language proficiency in the application of the STCW flag state endorsement.
IMAT carries out the following tests:
• ICS Marlins English Language Test for Seafarers
• Marlins English Language Test for Cruise Ship Staff
• Marlins English Language Test for Offshore Workers
After the test, a certificate will be issued stamped and signed by the Marlins administrator of the approved test center bearing the reference code of the certificate, which will allow you to check its veracity.
The test consists of No. 85 multiple choice questions selected from a database of questions related to Maritime English. The test evaluates the ability to:
- Listening comprehension
- Grammar
- Vocabulary
- Different sounds and pronunciation
- Reading
- Time and numbers
The final score is calculated as an overall percentage.
There is no time limit for testing, but the maximum time recommended is 60 minutes.

The Marlins Test of Spoken English (TOSE) is an oral interview different from ICS Marlins Test for Seafarers (online).
The TOSE was developed to assess the ability of seafarers to communicate effectively, evaluating listening and speaking skills during an individual interview.
Used in conjunction with the ICS Marlins English Language Test provides a comprehensive profile of the seafarer’s language skills. Upon completion of the assessment will be issued a certificate of the level reached.
