From 1 January 2015, all DP Certificates issued by The Nautical Institute must be revalidated every five years. DPOs renewing their certificates will now be asked to demonstrate Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as well as experience.
To revalidate your DPO Certificate, you will need to:
be enrolled in an NI-approved CPD programme and take the NI Revalidation online examination
OR
complete the NI DP Refresher Course, including the NI Revalidation online examination at training centre
The minimum entry requirement is a DPO Certificate issued by The NI and hold between 30 – 150 days (or more) Active Dp Seatime days
The original DPO Certificate and dp logbook should be presented at the DP centre where the DP Refresher Course is completed.
(Note: if the requirement is not met, the DP Revalidation Course should be completed)
This course can be used to refresh the knowledge of the DPOs at anytime, or for revalidation of DPO certificates.
At the end of the course, the student should:
Have acquired knowledge of the latest rules and regulations.
Have acquired knowledge of the latest developments within sensors and PRS.
Have acquired knowledge of the latest relevant DP incidents and why they occurred.
Be able to recognise the various alarm, warning and information messages.
Be able to carry out operational planning, risk assessment and hazard identification tasks.
Be able to set up the DP system for a particular task/operation.
Be able to decide on courses of action because of systems failure.

The assessment for the DP Refresher and Competency assessment Course includes a theoretical (NI online) exam and a practical assessment. Each component must be completed successfully.
Online Assessment
In order to be awarded a certificate of completion for the DP Refresher and Competency assessment Course ,the DPO must pass an online assessment at the training centre.
The exam is composed of multiple-choice questions that have already been developed from the Basic/Induction Course and the Simulator Course. The online assessment will consist of 30questions and shall be completed in one hour with a pass mark of 70%.
Students who fail the first attempt are allowed to have another two attempts within six months of the first attempt; however, the second attempt must be undertaken within 96 hours of the first attempt. If the student fails these three attempts, the student is required to repeat the Refresher
course and Competency Assessment course and undertake the assessment again.
Practical Assessment
The practical assessment must be done individually. The practical assessment shall include the
following items, which the student must pass to be awarded a certificate of completion for the course:
i. Complete a DP Checklist.
ii. Set up the vessel on DP.
iii. Move the vessel from set-up position to a worksite.
iv. Deal with a system/sensor/thruster failure or environmental change (at least two).
The training centres must develop their own practical exams based upon the course objectives
listed above.
The Course is total 5 days (34 hours theoretical and practical lesson) included a final assessment the last day
Day 1: from 8.30 to 13.00 – 14.00 to 16.45 (coffee break 15’/Lunch 13:00 to 14:00 included)
Day 2: from 8.30 to 13.00 – 14.00 to 16.45 (coffee break 15’/Lunch 13:00 to 14:00 included)
Day 3: from 8.30 to 13.00 – 14.00 to 16.45 (coffee break 15’/Lunch 13:00 to 14:00 included)
Day 4: from 8.30 to 13.00 – 14.00 to 16.45 (coffee break 15’/Lunch 13:00 to 14:00 included)
Day 5: from 8.30 to 13.00 – 14.00 to 16.45 with Final Assessment (coffee break 15’/Lunch 13:00 to 14:00 included)
The DP Refresher/Revalidation course certificate will be issued on successful completion of the course, the course will be registered on NI/IMCA DP Logbook. The candidate will then be able to apply for Certificate Renewal via the NI Alexis platform.

The courses are weekly organized except the second, third week of August and the Christmas holiday season. In addition, courses are organized on request through private or corporate bookings.
